McDonald’s brings back a 1960s classic for a limited time
More than 60 years after it first appeared, McDonald's is bringing back its original Fried Apple Pie nationwide for a limited time. The return is part of the company's celebration leading up to America's 250th birthday, and for many customers, it is a chance to taste one of McDonald's most nostalgic menu items.
The Fried Apple Pie has been part of McDonald's history for decades. The dessert traces its roots back to the 1960s, when East Tennessee McDonald's owner Litton Cochran created a fried apple hand pie that became a local hit.
The recipe eventually caught the attention of McDonald's leadership and helped inspire what became one of the chain's signature desserts. According to the Cochran family, Litton's wife, Jo Cochran, spent months perfecting the recipe before it became a menu favorite.
The returning pie features 100% American-grown apples and a flaky fried crust with the same golden crunch that made the original famous. For customers who were around for the dessert back then, this is a chance to revisit a favorite memory. For younger customers, it may be their first opportunity to try the version many longtime McDonald's fans insist was the best one.
McDonald's is going all-in on the nostalgia
The pie itself is not the only thing making a comeback. To celebrate the return, McDonald's is building what might be the most extra tribute possible in a 35-foot Fried Apple Pie.
The giant roadside installation is being placed along historic Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, just outside Chicago. Visitors can stop for photos, grab a souvenir map, and take part in special launch events tied to the pie's return.
The oversized dessert display will remain in place from June 23 through July 4.
Don’t wait too long
The Fried Apple Pie returns to participating McDonald's locations nationwide beginning June 23. Unlike some recent menu additions that became permanent fixtures, this comeback is being billed as a limited-time offering.
So if you have heard your parents or grandparents talk about the original Fried Apple Pie, this summer might be your chance to get a taste for yourself. In a couple of days, you can grab a bite of the fan favorite at a McDonald’s location or on the app.
