Kroger has announced plans to acquire Giant Eagle in a $1.65 billion deal, marking Kroger's first major acquisition since its proposed $25 billion merger with Albertsons collapsed in 2024. If approved by regulators, the deal will bring nearly 200 Giant Eagle supermarkets under Kroger's umbrella while ending almost a century of local ownership for the regional grocery chain. Here is all we know about the deal.

Giant Eagle isn't going away

If you're worried about seeing your neighborhood Giant Eagle disappear overnight, that's not the plan. Kroger says the stores will continue operating under the Giant Eagle name, and the company expects to keep Giant Eagle's headquarters in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, with its existing leadership team in place.

The acquisition includes 197 supermarkets, 11 pharmacies, and approximately $9 billion in annual sales. The deal is expected to close sometime in 2027, pending regulatory approval.

This isn't just about adding more stores

According to Kroger, Giant Eagle brings several strengths that fit its long-term strategy, including a loyal customer base, a strong pharmacy business, and popular private-label products. The supermarket chain also comes with established regional markets.

For Kroger CEO Greg Foran, who joined the company earlier this year after previously leading Walmart U.S., the acquisition expands the company's footprint into markets where it already sees strong growth potential.

For shoppers and employees wondering what's next

Kroger says it does not expect to close stores or eliminate frontline jobs because of the acquisition. That means customers shouldn't expect widespread changes to their local stores right away. Corporate employees, however, could face a different reality as mergers often lead to overlapping administrative roles, making corporate restructuring a possibility even if stores remain open. Kroger has not commented specifically on potential corporate layoffs.

As for shoppers, there is some good news in Kroger’s plan to keep Giant Eagle's myPerks loyalty program. Still, there could be some changes over time.
