If you regularly purchase Trader Joe's Vegetable Fried Rice products, you'll need to check your lot numbers. A recall has been announced on almost 10 million pounds of the popular rice.

Rice may contain shards of glass

This isn't a recall notice you'll want to ignore. The company that makes the rice, Ajinomoto Foods of North America Inc., said it may contain shards of glass that are 1-3 cm in length and 2-4 mm in width.

The rice was sold in one-pound bags with the UPC 00521482 and a best-by date of 2/28/2026 to 11/19/2026.

These bags were sold in 42 states. This means that if you recently bought the fried rice, there is a strong chance your purchase is on the list.

The initial recall was announced in February

The recall was first announced on Feb. 19, but then expanded and re-announced on March 3. Details were still pretty sparse at that time, including just how much rice it affected.

Now that the recall has expanded, the company is making a push to ensure the word gets out.

A very serious warning

This is considered a serious recall, being listed as a Class II recall. This means if you have the product, you are advised not to take any chances and consume it.

The notice carries a pretty stark warning, stating “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” In plain English, the USDA thinks the risk of a hospital trip is low, but you definitely don't want to be the person who tests that theory.

You definitely don't want to mess around if you have some in your freezer.

Err on the side of extreme caution

When you see a warning this serious with such a massive quantity of the affected food product being recalled, it's important to leave nothing to chance.

Check what you have, and be sure to throw anything out that is affected or that you feel unsure about.
