TikTok is fast losing Gen Z’s energy. The app hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s still the first place people check for trends and chaos. But the vibe has changed.

Lately, a lot of Gen Z users are scrolling with one eyebrow raised.

Something about the feed feels off, and a big part of that shift is AI.

The scroll is still there, but the engagement is gone

While they still use the app, a growing chunk of Gen Z is not really participating on TikTok anymore. About 34% now just “lurk,” according to a March 2026 survey on the juvenile generation’s internet habits. They scroll, watch, and move on without liking or posting. It’s giving “I’m here, but don’t involve me.”

An even more telling indication of Gen Z fatigue on TikTok is that 31% say they’re scrolling out of habit, not because they want to.

AI is changing the feed, and it's not good

Nearly 4 in 10 Gen Z users say their TikTok feeds are now flooded with low-quality AI-generated content. There is more polished and performative stuff. More “this feels like it was made to go viral.”

Layer on top the part where 72% say content feels staged, 53% say it’s too commercial, and 33% say they have to “train” the algorithm just to see things they like.

For Gen Z, TikTok is starting to feel like a lot. And not in a good way. 43% of the age group say TikTok is more mentally draining now while 40% say it feels overwhelming. There’s another 24% who feel guilty about how long they spend on the platform. And for 29%, their time off the app gives them some “feel good” the app never does.

Nobody’s really leaving though

Despite the numbers, this is not a dramatic breakup and TikTok is still winning. 65% of Gen Z use it every day, and 32% say they’ll use it even more.

At the end of the day, TikTok is still where trends and culture happens. Which means Gen Z isn’t totally quitting. They’re just not as emotionally invested anymore.

Many are chasing old TikTok

In all of this, there is a clear sense of nostalgia. As shown in a survey of Gen Z respondents:

  • 79% say they miss the early days of TikTok.
  • 41% miss when there were fewer ads and brands.
  • 34% miss more relatable, unfiltered content.
  • 27% miss before influencer culture took over.

Beyond content, there’s also growing caution surrounding the use of TikTok.  60% of Gen Z say they trust TikTok less than before, 74% are more careful about what they engage with, and 64% are more aware of their data. For 51%, the platform feels more censored.

How TikTok can win Gen Z back

The data is pointing to a clear tension: people still want TikTok, but they don’t want a feed that feels overly polished, overly commercial, or filled with content that doesn’t feel real.

With more content that feels genuine and more discovery, perhaps, the platform can restore its fading connection to its population of Zoomers.
