If you have a Gatorade bottle chilling in your fridge right now, you might want to check the label before taking a gulp. More than 122,000 cases of Gatorade sold across 37 states have been recalled because some bottles contain Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6 that weren't listed on the label. The FDA classified the recall as Class II, meaning the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects. While it's not a worst-case food safety emergency, it's still a reason to check your bottle rather than shrugging and reaching for the straw.

Four variants of Gatorade are affected

The recall covers 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Orange, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero and Gatorade Orange Zero. The recall was voluntarily initiated by PepsiCo on September 25 and was classified by the FDA on October 2. It remains active.

The affected products were distributed across 37 states, including California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania and Washington.

The problem isn't that the dyes are banned

Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine) and Yellow No. 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF) are approved for use by the FDA. The issue is that they were not declared on the affected Gatorade labels.

According to the FDA, Yellow No. 5 can cause allergic-type reactions, including bronchial asthma, in certain susceptible people. That sensitivity is considered uncommon but can occur more frequently among people with aspirin hypersensitivity.

Check your bottle before you drink it

If you have any of the recalled flavors at home, don't just check the flavor name. Check the lot number and date printed on the bottle.

The recalled lots include 072226 DT - APR 18 27, 072426 TL - APR 20 27, 072726 TL - APR 23 27, 072926 TL - APR 25 27, 073026 TL - APR 25 27, 073126 TL - APR 27 27, 080126 DL - APR 28 27, 082126 OA - APR 18 27, 081026 TL - MAY 07 27, 082026 DL - MAY 17 27, 082526 KM - MAY 22 27, 083126 DT - JUN 07 27, 091026 DL - JUN 07 27, 090426 KM - JUN 01 27 and 091126 DL - JUN 08 27.

If you have a drink that matches one of the recalled lots, don't drink it, particularly if you know you are sensitive to food dyes.
