You expect a Walmart run to end with groceries, maybe a random impulse buy you didn’t need. Not a police chase going the wrong way on a highway. But that’s what happened at a Walmart in Alabama on Sunday afternoon, and somehow, the most shocking part isn’t even the chase. It’s the kids caught in the middle.

Things started simple and escalated fast

Police were called to a Walmart in Calera over a theft. Officers spotted the suspects leaving and followed them. At that point, it looked like a routine situation.

Then things took a sharp turn, as the suspects entered Interstate 65, going the wrong way.

Officers initially backed off when they realized there were children in the car, but the situation kept escalating. Multiple law enforcement agencies had to step in, and eventually, the vehicle was stopped using tire spikes.

And then, things got worse. After the car was stopped, the suspects tried to run. They didn’t get far. But inside the vehicle, officers found two young children.

But that wasn’t all. Police later realized two other children had been left behind at Walmart. Just left there. The suspects are now facing a long list of charges, including retail theft, child abandonment, reckless endangerment, and attempting to flee police. And that’s before you even get into the traffic violations.

Police also noted that one suspect had prior retail theft charges, while the other had dozens of prior arrests and outstanding warrants. Authorities described the situation as showing “no regard” for the safety of the children or the public.

Incidents involving retail theft and police chases are not uncommon. What makes this case different is the involvement of children at multiple stages. Thankfully, all four children were located, and the suspects are in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
