Another day, another restaurant chain announces closures. Five Guys will close locations in seven states this year, but unlike other restaurants, there may not be a net loss thanks to expansion plans.

A reshuffling is taking place

Five Guys recently opened locations, so it may come as a surprise that the chain is now announcing closures. Without specifics, it's unclear what the net effect will be. There's a chance that these closures will be balanced out by new locations opening.

It's reported by The Street that four recent closures in California mean 55 people lost their jobs. That's just a small snapshot of what's happening nationwide during this apparent reshuffling.

Five Guys had been expanding its footprint

Five Guys is wildly popular with restaurant-goers, and in 2024, the chain capped off the year with a net gain of 35 stores. Its expansion plans were being seen with new locations popping up.

However, even with those 35 new locations, it closed 28 restaurants that same year, according to QSR Magazine

This reshuffling doesn't seem to be anything new for Five Guys. It seems to be the restaurant's way of reacting to changing consumer habits and demands in different regions.

Pricing could be holding diners back

There are several reasons diners may not be eating out as often as they used to, but with Five Guys it may be the pricing that's keeping people away.

Five Guys has traditionally been in the middle between a typical fast-food burger joint and a sit-down restaurant. Even though it's cheaper than a sit-down restaurant, that doesn't mean it's affordable for people right now.

With so many living on a tight budget, dining out is often one of the first luxury that gets cut.

Hit up your local Five Guys while you can

The main takeaway here is that if you've got a local Five Guys that you love eating at, you may want to visit it sooner rather than later.
