Cream cheese recall hits supermarkets in multiple states
Don't be surprised if you stroll into your local grocery store to grab some cream cheese and find your favorite brand missing. A recall has been issued that is quickly expanding with more than a dozen flavors found to contain potentially fatal Listeria.
The original recall was announced in February
If you're the type that enjoys bagels and cream cheese, this recall will hit home. The FDA is warning that Listeria can cause "serious adverse health consequences or death."
The original recall was released on Feb. 20. The FDA warned that the bacterium that causes Listeria (Listeria monocytogenes) might be present in the cream cheese.
Made Fresh Salads is the only brand recalled
Right now, only one brand has been recalled. There are 14 flavors of Made Fresh Salads' five-pound tubs, and its Whipped Cream Cheese and Vegetable Cream cheese on the list.
Because it can take a little time to catch all the contaminated products, there is still a slim chance the list may expand.
The company warns its customers
Made Fresh Salads responded to the recall in February, telling people that it's common to have short-term symptoms if you are infected with Listeria.
Those who are young, elderly, or have a weak immune system could be more prone to a serious infection.
No illnesses have been reported as of yet. The company blames a part of the mixer for the contamination, and has stopped using it.
It's always best to check
If you have any of Made Fresh Salads' cream cheese in your fridge, you can check the company's website or the FDA website to get the most current recall information. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
