Chick-fil-A changes its famous waffle fry recipe
The waffle fries at Chick-fil-A are back to their original formula after a plot twist that had many customers complaining. In late 2024, the company added pea starch to its Waffle Potato Fries. Now, a decision has been made to remove it.
What changed (and changed back)
At some point in 2024, diners noticed their favorite fries tasted very different. Chick-fil-A had added a pea starch coating, typically used to boost crispiness and texture. While the decision made sense in theory, it did not really come out well, if the reviews are anything to go by. While some did appreciate the change, most believed the fries tasted worse.
Aside from the issue of taste, there were also allergy concerns. Peas and peanuts are both legumes, and in some cases, people with peanut allergies can react to pea-based ingredients. That made the new coating a problem for some customers.
Now, according to the company, the infamous pea starch is gone. The ingredient list has been updated, and the original-style recipe is back.
The response to the reversal has been great. Judging from internet reactions, no one is really going to miss the now benched recipe. Some customers have already noted the fries now “taste how they used to,” with salt actually sticking again — which, for fry-lovers, is not a minor detail.
As one Redditor put it: “As someone who hates the pea starch, I had their fries the other day and can confirm that they tasted how they used to.”
While some people apparently didn’t notice anything at all, it is safe to say the response to the reversal has been overwhelmingly positive.
One thing to keep in mind
Some locations may still be working through old inventory. If you have allergies, you might want to double-check with staff before ordering.
