Retail store closures continue to mount in 2026 as another big chain falls victim. Albertsons, the parent company of Safeway, has announced the closure of several locations this year to slash costs and reallocate resources to its high-performing stores.

Albertsons adjusts to the current climate

Grocery stores have faced several challenges in the past year or so. Factors like shifting consumer demands, fierce competition, and inflation have forced a desperate need to slash costs.

Its 111-year history doesn't leave it immune to these factors, and as a result, the chain has announced store closures in 2026. These closures are in addition to a handful in 2025.

It's not just the company and workers who will suffer

Store closures mean job loss for communities, but it also goes deeper than that. If you're shopping in one of the affected towns or cities, it means fewer choices for you, and could result in higher prices being paid.

Depending on how many grocery stores you have nearby, it can also mean you'll need to travel further to pick up groceries, which means paying more in transportation costs.

The focus shifts to high-performing stores

Albertsons is no longer looking towards expansion; instead, it's clear that consolidation is the plan. The company has said it will focus on high-performing stores and its e-commerce operations.

You'll notice moving forward that Albertsons will be placing a lot of emphasis on the website and mobile app, in hopes of increasing the number of online shoppers. The company will also spend more on improving its tech infrastructure.

Customers and workers pay the price

Store closures mean customers and workers will pay the ultimate price while another big chain tries to figure out how to best navigate the current environment.
