For decades, Chuck Norris threw it down in Hollywood. He was not just the regular action star. He was a symbol of strength and toughness known across different generations.

And now, at 86, the man behind all that legend is sadly gone. After a sudden medical emergency, he passed away peacefully on March 19, surrounded by family in Hawaii.

Here is all we know about his passing and the legend that he was.

He was active just days before his death

Earlier this month, Norris posted a video celebrating his 86th birthday, sparring with a partner and writing: “I don’t age… I level up.”

According to reports, he was still training as recently as March 18. People who had spoken to him around that time described him as alert, upbeat, and in good spirits.

Also, it was his birthday on March 10, and he celebrated it on Instagram with a video of him boxing.

“I don’t age. I level up,” he said in the video, as well as the caption of the post.

His career ran across five decades of action films and TV

Norris built his name through action films in the 1970s and 1980s. Films like The Way of the Dragon (also starring Bruce Lee), Missing in Action, Invasion U.S.A., and The Delta Force solidified his footing in Hollywood.

He later became widely known on television as Cordell Walker in Walker, Texas Ranger, which ran through the 1990s. And fun fact: he became an actual Texas Ranger in December 2010 alongside his brother Aaron.

In total, Norris’ filmography spans more than 50 years, with a 2012 appearance in The Expendables 2 introducing him to a newer audience. His notable contributions to film and television earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989.

He trained in martial arts and served in the U.S. Air Force

Before Hollywood, Norris served in the U.S. Air Force between 1958 and 1962.

During and after his service, he trained in martial arts and eventually earned black belts across several disciplines. His background in martial arts became the foundation of his film career.

He also had a long-standing connection with Bruce Lee, training with him in the 1960s before appearing together on screen.

He somehow made it to meme culture

Despite having a legacy from pre-internet Hollywood, Norris somehow stayed culturally relevant even after stepping back from regular acting.

At some point in the 2000s, Chuck Norris jokes took over, with his tough guy persona being elevated to actual invincibility.

“Chuck Norris once had a heart attack. His heart lost.”

“When Chuck Norris does a push-up, he’s pushing the earth down.”

“Death once had a near-Chuck Norris experience.”

“The dinosaurs looked at Chuck Norris the wrong way once. You know what happened to them.”

“We live in an expanding universe. All of it is trying to get away from Chuck Norris.”

Memes like these circulated for years and introduced him to audiences who may not have seen his films or TV work. Through them, he became this exaggerated symbol of strength and immortality.

And he leaned into it. Even in his 80s, he continued to post occasionally, sharing life updates with his fans and pretty much maintaining his legendary status.

Tributes are already pouring in

Following the announcement, tributes have been shared by the actor’s family members, fans, and fellow actors.

A statement by his family confirming his death read: “To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family.”

Actors like Jean-Claude Van Damme and Sylvester Stallone both posted messages remembering him, with Stallone describing him as “All American in every way.”

And not unlike the internet, some fans are mixing real tributes with references to the same jokes that made him a meme in the first place.
